Heart of Darkness & Apocalypse Now

2. Much of what Conrad hints at can actually be seen in Apocalypse Now. How does it affect the reaction of the work?

Analysis:

After reading the novel and seeing the movie, I noticed several changes in the movie from the novel, that changed my reaction to the novel. Being able to actually see what Conrad is referring too or is hinting at helps to comprehend the story. In the novel Conrad focuses on Kurtz voice, not on a picture or story. Kurtz voice, plays a major role in the novel and the movie. But actually being able to hear the voice that Conrad is focusing on, helps you to understand, the importance and the impact it has on Marlow and the others. Also, in the novel the story takes place on the Congo River in Africa, in the Apocalypse Now the story takes place during the Vietnam War. This change in setting, changes the story. Having the movie take place during that time, shows the amount of violence that the crew faces. This changes the moof of the story. The violence that Conrad hints at but never describes, is shown repeatedly throughout the movie. Also, the major thems in the novel are imperialism and racism, they play an important role in the novel, yet they’re not prominent in the movie. The impact of Kurts voice and the violence of the Vietnam War are shown in the clips below.
