Prufrock
“LET us go the, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherised upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious agrument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question…
Oh, do not ask, “What is it?”
Let us go and make our visit.”
Analysis:
In the stanza above, he refers to everything in halves. ”Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, the muttering retreats, of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels.” As he’s describing his night, it’s almost as if he’s half asleep. He’s half alive, “Like a patient etherised upon a table.” To be etherised means to be put under a anesthetic, your groggy not fulling there. He’s not seeing things fulling, he’s living in a fog.
